Oregon Butte opal is an extremely unique variety of opal found in a remote site called Opal Butte, Oregon, near Morrow County. It was originally discovered by Tiffany & Co. in late 1930's and early 1940's, but was later mined out fully in the 1990's. Most of the gem quality material is now gone. The butte area is privately owned and not open to the public. Oregon Opal is know as a "fire opal" with color shades of red, orange, yellow, blue and clear and the gem material is translucent. These particular medium pieces/shards of rough gemstone, and have been enclosed in a glass water-filled vial for display/sample purposes. Each vile measures 3" x 1" inch and contains 25 grams (125 carats) of opal rough. Each has a mix of intense deep orange, yellow, red, brown, clear and white color material. Some pieces are still have some of the loose "host rock" attached. Pictured are samples of the vials, taken from the many vials being offered.
