ITEM DESCRIPTION
Featured is a genuine Hampton Butte Oregon Jasper cabochon. Hampton Butte is one of the notable locations for rockhounding and collecting petrified wood in Oregon. This 120-acre rockhounding site, located 12 miles northeast of Highway 20 near the unincorporated community of Brothers, Oregon is where this material is found. The specimens at Hampton Butte come in a variety of colors, including white, gray, black, and yellow, but the most prized pieces range from turquoise to dark green. These striking colors are likely caused the presence of minerals like chromium or copper during the fossilization process. In the case of Hampton Butte, the green coloration is often attributed to the mineralization of the wood with copper and iron oxidation, which imparts a vibrant green hue.

Both petrified wood and limb casts are found here. The wood is typically more jasperized and opalized, though agatized specimens can occasionally be discovered. Agate and jasper are also commonly found in this area.

This particular specimen shows an opaque body with hues of blue, brown, white, orange and that rare dark green to turquoise color throughout. One of the top edges of this cabochon was left "original" to show this material's natural imperfections. Highly collectible.
